Manchester City needed a late goal to beat Everton and stay within striking distance of Barclays FA Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea.

Walsh nets late Man City winner

Steph Houghton made her 200th appearance for Manchester City but it was a hard-fought three points gained against Everton.

Sam Mewis might have opened the scoring for City, in a first half that saw the visitors lose both Danielle Turner and Ingrid Moe Wold to injury.

City had still not found the net approaching the last ten minutes, when Ellie Roebuck was called upon to punch clear a troublesome Nicoline Sorensen corner.

However, moments later the hosts did make the breakthrough, Lauren Hemp with the set up and Keira Walsh with the finish.

Kerr and England on target for Chelsea

Chelsea retained a two-point lead at the top of the table when winning away at West Ham.

Martha Thomas fired just over early on for the Hammers, only for Sam Kerr to give Chelsea a sixth-minute lead when heading in Beth England’s cross.

The roles were reversed two minutes after the interval, Kerr’s cross put away by England’s header.

Manchester United stayed clear of Arsenal in the race for Champions League qualification when comfortbaly seeing off Aston Villa 3-0.

United went ahead after a stray Villa pass on 27 minutes saw Kirsty Hanson hit a deflected shot over keeper Lisa Weiss and in off the cross bar.

The lead was doubled before the break, Lucy Staniforth swinging in a free kick which was powerfully headed home by Jess Sigsworth.

The points were made certain 18 minutes from time, Hayley Ladd knocking the ball into the six-yard box for Katie Zelem to nod high into the net.

Arsenal quickly moved back to within six points of Manchester United with one game in hand, with a 4-0 victory over Birmingham City at St George’s Park.

Vivianne Miedema headed against the woodwork but it was later Caitlin Foord who struck twice in a three-minute spell, opening the scoring with a header and finishing the second from close-range.

Miedema wrapped it up with a 20-yard strike inside the last quarter of an hour, and then turned provider for Lisa Evans’ stoppage-time goal.

Kaagman double secures Brighton victory

Inessa Kaagman’s 12-minute second-half brace saw Brighton beat Spurs 2-0, to go within a point of sixth-placed Reading.

The first half ended goalless but Tottenham’s Shelina Zadorsky forced a good stop from Emma Koivisto.

But it was Brighton’s Kaagman who broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, before netting a second time for the Seagulls from just inside the box.

The bar was hit three times in the dying minutes, from Albion’s Nora Heroum and Megan Connolly’s follow-up, before Kit Graham was denied for Spurs.
