Manchester United went third in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, Manchester City closed in on Spurs in fourth.

Manchester United 5-0 Birmingham City (Att: 1,015) Aston Villa 0-3 Manchester City (Att: 483)

Manchester United brought Birmingham City back down to earth with a first-half bump after last week’s win at Arsenal, to go level on points with second-placed Chelsea but from two games more.

Although Emily Ramsey prevented an early goal for Vilde Bøe Risa and the follow-up was headed off the line, the hosts were three goals up inside 20 minutes.

Leah Galton was heavily involved, cutting the ball back for Katie Zelem to open the scoring. then turning home from crosses by Alexia Russo and Ella Toone.

It was 4-0 just before the break. Toone’s shot from distance came back off the crossbar and went in via Ramsey’s head.

Louise Quinn almost pulled one back after the hour mark but her volley hit the bar, United then got a fifth when Russo met Hannah Blundell’s cross with a diving header.

Manchester City went within a point of Spurs in fourth but from a game more following victory away to Aston Villa.

The visitors were ahead inside five minutes with the aid of a deflection, as Georgia Stanway’s 20-yard drive beating Hannah Hampton.

Five minutes before half-time, Lucy Bronze and Ellen White combined perfectly to present Vicky Losada with a tap-in.

Jess Park twice missed the target when well-placed from crosses by Lauren Hemp and Stanway, the later stabbing home the third on 74 minutes from a Janine Beckie delivery.

Kadija Shaw was denied a goal by Hampton’s save on the line but Manchester City completed three away league and cup wins in seven days without conceding once.
