FAWSL: Duggan earns Toffees a draw against West Ham | OneFootball

Everton hosted West Ham United at Walton Hall Park on Sunday afternoon. Coming off of league wins three weeks ago, both teams looked to push further up the league table.

Adriana Leon and Maisy Barker were unavaliable heading into the match. Canada forward Leon underwent surgery to help after a foot fracture. Barker is also out with a long term foot injury.

Match report

First half recap

The first major play of the game didn’t take place until the 15th minute. This came when Izzy Christiansen crossed in from the right side of the pitch, only for Hammers goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold to tip the ball away. The ball then landed for Aurora Galli to take a shot from outside of the goal, but the shot was block by the Hammers defence.

It took 22 minutes before West Ham had their first big chance of the game. They got hold of a loose ball before Lisa Evans sent it through to Tameka Yallop. Her shot went wide of the diving Sandy MacIver.

Finally, West Ham scored the first goal of the game in the 40th minute. Katarina Svitkova drove into the Toffees’ penalty area and pulled the ball back for Zaneta Wyne to tap it into the open goal.

Second half recap

The Hammers came close in the opening minutes of the second half when Svitkova put Evans through with a well-timed through ball. The Scotland internationals’ shot from inside the penalty area left MacIver spilling the ball. Players from both sides scrambled for the ball, only for it to roll out for a goal kick.

The Toffees had plenty of chances to score but they didn’t see an equalizer until the 76th minute. Toni Duggan intercepted a pass from inside the Hammers’ box. On the half volley, Duggan took her shot and the ball sailed past Arnold.

Everton could’ve had the winner a minute later when Hanna Bennison took a 30-yard shot only to be saved by Arnold. Though, West Ham struggled to clear the ball.

Late on, both Everton and West Ham looked to win the game but both were unable to find the finishing touch in the additional time.

What the result means

In the end, the two sides settled for a draw. At the current moment, the result sees West Ham in sixth position, overtaking Reading. Everton are ninth, but could be 10th if Villa beat Tottenham.

On an individual note, Duggan’s strike was her first WSL goal for the Toffees since her return from Spain.
