Chelsea hit nine to move top

Scorers: Reiten 3′, 45+5′ Kerr 5′, 47′ England 7′, 28′ Nouwen 11′, James 88′, Fleming 90′

Chelsea Women moved to the top of the Women’s Super League with a stunning 9-0 thrashing of Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

In a frantic early flurry, Guro Reiten got things going with a free-kick after just three minutes before Mille Bright fed Sam Kerr to add a quickfire second.

Just two minutes after that, Bethany England pulled off a superb strike and then number four came via Aniek Nouwen’s first goal for the club.

The fifth arrived on 28 minutes as England claimed her second of the afternoon after being found by Retien’s perfect pass before the Norwegian made it six in the fifth minute of first half injury-time.

It took just two minutes after the restart for the goal glut to pick up where it left off as Kerr found the net again via a header.

And the Blues finished with a further flourish as Lauren James (her first for the club) and Jessie Fleming scored in the final two minutes to take their side to nine for the afternoon.

Emma Hayes’ side now move a point ahead of Arsenal at the top of the WSL table after a win which is their joint-biggest ever in the league as well as being the joint-biggest in WSL history for an away side, joining Liverpool’s 9-0 win at Doncaster in 2013.

Brighton into top half with West Ham win

Scorers: Whelan 3′

Brighton Women leapfrogged West Ham in the table thanks to an early strike from Aileen Whelan on the road.

It was a case of more early goals in east London as Brighton took an early lead via a well-worked move down the right, resulting in Whelan deftly finding the bottom corner from the centre of the area.

Megan Connolly almost scored a second after the interval, only to see her blistering drive denied by the crossbar but Inessa Kaagman did make sure of the win with nine minutes remaining.

The Seagulls now move ahead of their opponents, up to sixth in the table with the win.

Russo at the double as Manchester United beat Everton

Scorers: Russo 35′, 84′, Zelem (pen) 54′; Emslie 4′

Manchester United are up to third in the table after they came from behind to beat Everton.

The Toffees took a shock lead after just four minutes, when Claire Emslie became the first opposition player to score against United at Old Trafford in the WSL.

But the hosts went in search of an equaliser and they got one 10 minutes before half-time, when Alessia Russo’s header looped over goalkeeper Alexandra Elena MacIver for 1-1.

Into the second half and United were awarded a penalty when Lucy Graham brought down Martha Thomas in the box. Katie Zelem stepped up and blasted home for 2-1.

Thomas then had the ball in the net for a third United goal, but the flag went up for offside against Maria Thorisdóttir despite replays showing she was in fact onside.

But the third goal did come in the 84th minute, when Russo headed home from a corner for her second of the afternoon.
