Another Bundesliga title race appeared to end on Tuesday evening.

Borussia Dortmund have added Mats Hummels, Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard, Erling Haaland and Emre Can over the last 12 months. But one thing hasn’t changed and they still sit second in the table, seven points behind Bayern Munich.

Speaking after the game, Lucien Favre did little to end rumours that his days in the dugout are now numbered.

“I know how things are going to go,” he told Sky Sport. “I’ll speak about it in a few weeks.”

That presumably means when the Bundesliga season comes to a close at the end of June.

Which opens the door for Niko Kovac.

According to various reports in Germany, Dortmund have been in contact with the the ex-Bayern head coach in recent months.

Kovac’s name was mentioned when a poor run of form had Favre’s position questioned in the autumn and the ex-Croatia international also rejected approaches from hometown club Hertha BSC since he was sacked by Bayern last year.

Dortmund ran Bayern close in the Bundesliga last season but Kovac ultimately claimed the double.

However, that didn’t silence his doubters and he lost his job in November with Bayern fourth in the league. He led the team to five wins from the first 10 Bundesliga games of the season. They have gone on to win 15 of 18 under Hansi Flick.
