Farewell match for a footballing legend

On Wednesday 31 August, Alex Meier will once again take to the greatest of footballing stages for a 19:00 CEST kick-off at Deutsche Bank Park.

Alexander Meier could not have signed off in better style. In the final match of his professional career on 5 May 2018, he scored the final goal in a 3-0 win for Eintracht Frankfurt at home to Hamburger SV, less than four minutes after coming off the bench. It was the last of the former captain’s 137 goals to go along with 55 assists in 379 appearances for the Eagles. The icing on the cake came a fortnight later when the club won the DFB Cup final, David Abraham allowing him to be the first to hoist the trophy aloft.

On Wednesday 31 August, the 39-year-old Bundesliga top-scorer from 2015 will be back in the limelight once again for a farewell match that is set to go down in the annals. Kick-off at Deutsche Bank Park is at 19:00 CEST, with former referee Manuel Gräfe in charge of proceedings.

Born in Hamburg, Meier spent 14 years with the club after moving to Frankfurt in 2004. Plenty of his former team-mates will be turning out to pay tribute to him: Former captains David Abraham and Ioannis Amanatidis have already signed up, as well as legends of the calibre of Anthony Yeboah and Uwe Bein, and Europa League-winners Sebastian Rode, Kevin Trapp and Martin Hinteregger. Both teams will be led by former Eintracht coaches on the night, namely Armin Veh and Friedhelm Funkel.

“I’m incredibly proud to have worn an Eintracht jersey for 14 years and eternally grateful to the club and their fans,” said Meier. “I’ll always be an Eagle. To get to run out in front of these incredible supporters one more time, play with my former team-mates and celebrate in front of the Nordwestkurve… it’s going to be absolutely wonderful and also give me an opportunity to say thank you to all the people who helped me along the way over 14 years and made the career that I had possible. This day promises to be a real celebration and I can’t wait to see everyone who comes along and celebrates it with me.”

EintrachtTV will be showing the game live.
