Manchester United were reduced to 10 men tonight as they succumbed to a 3-1 home defeat to PSG after Fred was sent off for a second yellow card in the second half.

While the replay showed that the Brazilian had made contact with the ball, in truth he was lucky not to have already been sent off as the PSG side cynically targeted him persistently after the first yellow.

But the majority of fans on social media blamed the manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, for not substituting Fred at half-time rather than the player himself for having dived in for the wreckless tackle, which was not reviewed by the VAR.

Comments included:

‘Ole is paid very well to make crucial decisions like that when it matters most. There was no way he should’ve kept Fred on when he was on a yellow and saw how the PSG players were behaving all game. It’s absolutely criminal and could cost us CL qualification.’

‘Hard not to start with taking a hard look at the manager. Ole didn’t react at all to PSG’s changes and surely had to remove Fred. The next foul was always going to do for him. Tough situation now. No guarantee of a point next week.

‘Madness for Ole to keep Fred on the pitch, only has himself to blame. A really good performance tarnished by stupid mistakes.’

‘Replace Fred with Pogba/VdB at half-time, like literally every single person could see was needed, and we’d likely have the point to go through. Inexplicable decision making to have Fred on until 70+ minutes. Can’t get my head around it.’

‘Bad night in the end for MUFC. Bad result in Istanbul, bad start v PSG, bad of Fred and big risk to keep him on by OGS. MU didn’t take chances.’
