On Tuesday, May 21, Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos announced that he would retire from professional football after representing Germany at this summer’s European Championship.

Kroos, 34, has had an illustrious career since joining Real Madrid in 2014. During his time with the club, he has won 22 trophies, including four Champions League titles.

He also won another Champions League trophy with Bayern Munich before his move to Spain. Additionally, he has secured four La Liga titles with Real Madrid.

Earlier this month, reports suggested that Kroos was close to signing a contract extension with Real Madrid, which would have kept him at Santiago Bernabeu for the 2024-25 season as well.

However, the midfielder has now decided to hang up his boots, choosing to end his professional career on his own terms. He plans to make his final appearance in front of his home fans.

Messages for Kroos

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Kroos bid farewell to the Madrid supporters, expressing his gratitude and appreciation.

Real Madrid fans do not want Kroos to retire.

The announcement prompted an outpouring of support from fellow players. Vinicius and Rodrygo responded with tear emojis, reflecting their sadness at his departure.

Former teammates Marcelo and James Rodriguez hailed him as a “legend,” while current players Joselu and Lucas Vazquez echoed similar emotions.

Kroos’ decision to retire has deeply affected the Real Madrid squad. Fans have also shared their emotions, with one even stating that they would rather see Kroos stay than have Kylian Mbappe join the team.

It is to be noted that Kroos will play his final match for Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday against Real Betis.

Following this, he will aim to add another Champions League title to his collection when Los Blancos face Borussia Dortmund on June 1.
