Paolo Jarre, the psychotherapist treating Nicolo Fagioli, confirmed the banned Juventus midfielder is ‘responding positively’ to his treatment plan against gambling addiction.

The 22-year-old Italian was handed a seven-month ban back in October after admitting to placing bets on football matches that didn’t involve his teams, keeping him out of action until May 25, 2024. He was also ordered to attend treatment for gambling addiction and make 10 public appearances discussing his case.

Fagioli has kept out of the spotlight since being handed his ban, quietly training with his Juventus teammates and completing his recovery work with Jarre. The Old Lady have backed their midfielder, handing him a new long-term contract back in November, tying him to the club to June 2028.

Fagioli update

Speaking to Tuttosport via TMW, Jarre was asked how Fagioli is doing in his treatment for gambling addiction.

“He is responding positively to the therapies. He regularly participates in weekly meetings, implements all the prescriptions given to him, and also continues with public testimony meetings.

“While the football ban is almost over, my work with him still isn’t because the therapy requires a minimum period of at least a year, and we only started in October.”

He was asked where football sits in Fagioli’s mind as he continues the fight against gambling addiction.

“One of the dreams that he cultivates without illusions is that of the European Championship.

“We remembered together the story of Paolo Rossi, disqualified for two years for football betting, he had returned to play at the end of May as is happening to Nicolò, and then Bearzot had called him up for the World Cup, which Italy won, and he was top scorer.

“An evocative example, even if the circumstances were different because Fagioli was not banned for sporting misconduct, he never bet on his own team.”
