DIRIAMBA, Nicaragua – The 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup continued on Thursday night with Fernan Faerron scoring to help 10-man Herediano of Costa Rica salvage a 1-1 draw with Nicaraguan club Diriangen in Group C action on Thursday night at the Estadio Cacique Diriangen in Diriamba, Nicaragua.

It was a hard-fought first 45 minutes between the two sides, with the first big chance coming in the 15’ and it resulted in a goal for the hosts.

Former Motagua man Matias Galvaliz swung in a corner kick that met the rising Luis Copete, who turned a header into net for a 1-0 Diriangen lead.

The goal left Herediano rocking, but slowly they started working their way back into the match and came out the stronger of the two to start the second half.

However, their plans of a comeback initially took a wrong turn in the 49’ when Everardo Rubio was given a second yellow card for a challenge and was sent off, leaving the Costa Ricans with 10 men for the final 40 minutes of the match.

Instead, the man disadvantage seemed to galvanize Herediano and just minutes after Rubio’s sending off, they pulled level in the 52’ off a set piece when Miguel Basulto controlled a ball and fed Faerron, whose tidy finish made it 1-1.

Herediano had all the positive momentum, but Diriangen wanted to make their man advantage count, so it made for a back-and-forth affair in the final 30 minutes.

The best look came for the home side in the 86’ on a surging, solo run from Jason Ingram that ended with a shot that tailed wide, sealing a single point fate for both sides.
