Leeds United made their fourth signing of the summer as Swedish international Gabriel Gudmundsson joins the Whites from French side Lille.
The versatile full-back has penned a four-year deal in West Yorkshire, committing his future to Elland Road until 2028.
Below are eight facts and figures about our latest recruit...
Gabriel is the son of former player Niklas Gudmundsson who represented Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town during the 1990s, as well as lengthier spells with Halmstads BK and Malmö FF, and the Swedish national team.
Gabriel has made 13 appearances in the UEFA Champions League, all of which have come with Lille. He made his debut in the competition against an RB Salzburg side that featured Brenden Aaronson in 2021 and, last term, played in nine of his team’s 10 matches in the competition.
Two of those encounters in the Champions League last term brought victories over both Madrid clubs. Gudmundsson starred at left back against Real Madrid, helping his side keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory on home soil against Los Blancos. Then, away against Atlético, the 26-year-old played as a wing-back in a 3-1 success in the Spanish capital.
The full-back made his professional debut aged just 17 for boyhood club Halmstads BK in 2016 in a Svenska Cupen tie with IFK Hässleholm. Deployed on the day as a winger, Gudmundsson scored the second goal in a 4-0 victory for his team.
Gabriel becomes the sixth player from Sweden to represent Leeds United. The previous five were Tomas Brolin, Teddy Lucic, Marcus Antonsson, Pontus Jansson and Paweł Cibicki.
Gudmundsson has an impressive record with Sweden, with his nation winning 10 of the 15 matches he has played in. Gabriel earned a first cap against Serbia in 2022 and most recently represented the Blue and Yellow in a 2-0 win in Hungary last month.
In his career so far, the 26-year-old has been used as a left-back, central defender, right-back, left midfielder, central midfielder, right midfielder, left winger, right winger and centre forward!
The defender reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Conference League with Lille in the 2023/24 season, featuring in all 10 matches.
