There is nothing concrete between Mason Greenwood and Lazio according to trusted journalist, Fabrizio Romano.

The future of the striker promises to be one of the biggest stories of the upcoming window.

It was first thought that new owners, INEOS, would be tempted to give Greenwood a chance to rebuild his career at Old Trafford but recent reports have tended to move in the opposite direction.

He has impressed while on loan at Getafe this season without really taking the league by storm.

The United academy product has been a regular in the side, playing 29 times and scoring eight goals.

His early season form saw him linked to La Liga giants such as Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

However, it has been reported that the Catalan club’s interest has waned due to fears they have over fans’ reaction to the signing of the controversial forward.

Moreover, the potential price of the player is said to have put off Atletico from entering the race.

Therefore, it seems Serie A may be a more likely landing spot for the 22-year-old. Lazio were originally interested in the player last summer before Getafe stole a march and sealed a deadline deal for the striker.

Fellow Italians, Juventus have also been heavily linked to him in recent weeks.

Writing in his daily briefing Romano commented, “I’m still told that the idea is for Greenwood to be sold, for the club to cash in on him”.

However, Lazio do not seem to be a major option at this moment in time.

Romano added, “Despite reports, I don’t have anything on Lazio and Greenwood so far. Many clubs are monitoring him but all waiting to understand Man United’s final position. Lazio asked for Greenwood on Deadline Day last summer but it was always Getafe leading the race from what I heard”.

An interesting point is that nobody can be one hundred percent sure what INEOS’ and United’s intentions are with the player. It is assumed by many that the Englishman’s future will be away from Old Trafford, but until that is confirmed, clubs, like fans, are largely in the dark on the issue.

It is a problem that the club need to handle quickly and firmly, to avoid the prolonged, embarrassing efforts of last summer, that saw the club to-and-fro on the issue in a shameful lack of self-awareness or decisiveness.
