Fabrizio Romano explains how Manchester United are suddenly back in the race for Sporting CP’s free-scoring striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Swedish star enjoyed a surreal campaign in Lisbon, scoring 54 goals from 52 outings. This is the sort of outrageous stats that certainly warrant a move to a bigger club.
In recent months, Gyokeres was said to be the desire of ‘half of Europe’. And yet, with the transfer market now in full motion, the 27-year-old has yet to receive concrete offers, as most of his suitors are either unable to launch a big bid worthy of his status, or have decided to pursue alternative options.
For instance, Arsenal, who were heavily linked with the Swede over the past few weeks, have now identified RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as their primary target to fill in the vacancy upfront.
Therefore, Romano explains how the lack of options could prompt Gyokeres to reconsider a move to Man United, an option that he ruled out only a few weeks ago when the Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
The Italian journalist revealed as much in his interview with DAZN, adding that Gyokeres has a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting dating back to last summer which allows him to leave the club in 2025 for a transfer fee in the region of £65-70 million.

The Red Devils are currently running on a limited budget, especially after signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million, and Bryan Mbeumo potentially on his way for a similar figure.
Nevertheless, Romano believes United would be able to raise funds for the former Brighton and Coventry star by selling the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho.
