Manchester City will replace Ederson with a new back-up goalkeeper this summer, should the Brazilian international leave the Etihad Stadium.

The Etihad shot-stopper has retained the number one spot between the sticks under Pep Guardiola since his arrival from SL Benfica in the summer of 2017, largely transforming the way Manchester City develop passages of play from defence.

Having remove club icon Joe Hart from the first-team picture upon his arrival, Pep Guardiola turned to ball-playing goalkeepers, first trialling the likes of Willy Caballero and Claudio Bravo, before sticking with Ederson until the present.

However, pressure on the 30-year-old has risen in the last two seasons through the introduction of Stefan Ortega Moreno as the club’s back-up, offering a much stronger challenge to his position than the likes of Zack Steffen and Arijanet Muric of the past.

And that pressure could finally take its toll this summer, with ongoing transfer links tying Ederson with a sensational exit to Saudi Arabia and the replacement being eyed up by the Premier League champions now having been revealed.

According to the information of transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City will replace Ederson by promoting current back-up goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno into the number one position, should the Brazilian leave the club in the coming weeks and months.

Despite City being aware of Ederson being in talks with Saudi Pro League clubs since May and maintaining their position of allowing the goalkeeper to leave if he wants to, the report makes clear that Etihad bosses are still waiting for an opening bid from Al-Nassr or other Saudi clubs.

Reports earlier this week linked Ederson with an eye-watering €60 million contract in the Saudi Pro League, on a contract stretching across the course of two-years as well as a reunion with former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte.

Al-Nassr boast a long list of former European superstars, namely Cristiano Ronaldo but not excluding the likes of former Liverpool frontman Sadio Mane, Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, and former Manchester United full-back Alex Telles.

Last summer also saw Manchester City complete another exit to the ambitious Saudi Pro League, with Riyad Mahrez bringing an end to his illustrious spell in Sky Blue by joining Al-Ahli.
