Harry Maguire has endured an indifferent third season at Manchester United, with last summer’s stellar performances in the European Championship almost irrelevant at this point.

The United skipper was named in the Team of the Tournament just ten months ago but has failed to carry that form into this season, putting his future at the club in doubt.

Maguire was a mainstay in the side under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but following the Norwegian’s sacking and the arrival of Ralf Rangnick, he has had to share responsibility with Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane.

Erik ten Hag was unveiled as the club’s next permanent manager earlier this week and although the Dutchman was high in praise of United’s captain, question marks over his future remain.

Journalist and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation in his latest CaughtOffside column, admitting that there are no signs of Maguire leaving the club this summer, despite Barcelona emerging as surprise suitors for the 29-year-old.

As per the report, Maguire will hold imminent talks with Ten Hag and the club to understand the plans going forward, with the expectation being that he is likely to play a ‘key part’ under the new manager.

Another centre-back is likely to be signed, however, with Pau Torres and Jurrien Timber linked with moves to Old Trafford.

SN’s verdict… Maguire’s form is a real cause for concern but with a full pre-season under a new manager under his belt, there is hope that he can re-establish himself as an assertive leader at the club.

His role as captain is under threat and Ten Hag offered no clarity on that situation in his maiden press conference but regardless of whether he keeps the armband, he will be desperate to turn his fortunes around.

He is still a capable defender and one poor season doesn’t change that, despite the over-the-top reactions on social media.
