As Liverpool prepare for a critical summer under Arne Slot, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the Reds’ “genuine interest” in Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking full-back Jeremie Frimpong. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano made it clear: “Liverpool interest is genuine because Liverpool are exploring this opportunity.”
It’s a significant development as the club braces for major changes, including the possible departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Romano reported: “Liverpool need to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will go to Real Madrid, and Jeremie Frimpong is a player they like.” With a €40 million release clause in place—“around 35 plus the solidarity payment… something close to 40 million euros,” as Romano outlined—Frimpong has emerged as a viable and immediate target.
Frimpong’s time at Bayer Leverkusen has been nothing short of transformative. Romano described their relationship as “fantastic years together,” but confirmed that the Dutch international feels now is the moment to move on: “Jeremy Frimpong feels this is the right moment to go, to say goodbye to Bayer Leverkusen.”
Slot’s Liverpool are reshaping not only in terms of coaching but also identity, with key roles in flux. Romano explained that Liverpool are “monitoring” the situation and are “well informed on the situation of Jeremie Frimpong.” With the player open to a move and the club eager for a new right-back option, the stars may be aligning.
Despite Liverpool’s strong interest, Romano noted they won’t have a free run. “There are also other clubs in the race,” he said, without naming specific rivals. Still, the clarity around the release clause adds structure to negotiations: “The clause is there. The clause is available this summer.” That figure—just shy of €40m—makes Frimpong both an affordable and attractive target for clubs looking to bolster their flanks.
Romano’s update indicates that while Liverpool have yet to make a formal move, their internal planning is already evolving around this deal. “Let’s see then how it will advance,” he teased, reflecting the strategic pace at which Liverpool typically operate.
Romano closed by reiterating that Frimpong is just one of many names on Liverpool’s radar: “It’s going to be an important summer for Liverpool… The centre-back, potentially the left-back… Let’s see what they want to do up front and with the midfielders.” Still, Frimpong appears to be one of the more advanced targets on their list—and one that fits both tactically and financially.
With Liverpool preparing for life without Trent Alexander-Arnold, Romano’s insight offers the clearest indication yet of who may step into his shoes. Jeremie Frimpong, with his pace, creativity and clear availability, could be an ideal fit for Slot’s system—and for Liverpool’s evolving project.
