The 21-year-old has been an integral figure at the City Ground this term, making 30 league appearances and proving to be one of Steve Cooper’s side’s most influential figures after forming a formidable partnership with Brennan Johnson down the right-hand side.

Although he has only recorded one goal and three assists during the 2021/22 Championship campaign, this is no reflection of his impact as he continues to shine on his temporary spell away from fellow second-tier side Middlesbrough.

Where was Middlesbrough forward Duncan Watmore born?

Not only has he thrived against Championship sides, but also against the likes of Arsenal and Leicester City in the FA Cup this calendar year and even before the tie against the latter, he was the subject of widespread interest from elsewhere.

The Gunners and Premier League rivals Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur were just three English sides thought to have been keen on luring him away from the Riverside Stadium.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich have also joined the race to recruit the young wide man who has played as a more defensive full-back and as a wing-back in the East Midlands this term.

He signed a new deal on Teesside prior to his move to Forest to extend his stay until 2024, allowing Chris Wilder’s men to maximise their valuation of one of their most valuable assets.

It has now been reported by Romano that he will be available for a fee of between €12m to €14m, a price tag many interested sides will be able to afford in the summer, though that figure range could easily change at any point.

The Verdict:

The 21-year-old has to be worth quite a bit more than that considering he signed an extension at the Riverside.

If he only had 12 months left on his contract in the summer, it would make more sense to slap this price tag on him – but Boro should be looking at demanding slightly more for his services considering how much of an asset he has been to their second-tier rivals this season.

The emergence of Isaiah Jones may have lowered this valuation – but it would be good for Wilder to see whether one of Jones or Spence can play on the left and still be as effective – because having them two as wing-backs could make Wilder’s side an even more formidable force than they already are.

Neil Taylor and Marc Bola may be decent assets to have on the left, but the former isn’t guaranteed to remain in Teesside for the long term and you would probably say the current Forest loanee gets in over the latter at this stage.

If they fail to win promotion at the end of this term though, they may find it difficult to keep hold of him and this is why they should be open to selling him, even with how promising he is.

Inserting a sizeable sell-on clause into any agreement would be wise – and that’s the only justification Boro can have for selling him at a potentially low price.
