Sheffield United are set to miss out on a summer transfer target
Sheffield United are set to miss out on the signing of Jonjoe Kenny this summer amid his departure from Hertha Berlin.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blades have been unable to win the race to the 28-year-old’s signature.
Kenny has been with the German club since 2022, but is now set to move on following the end of his current contract.
The full-back featured 32 times in the 2. Bundesliga last season, with Berlin coming 11th in the second tier standings.
Sheffield United were reportedly one of the clubs in the mix to sign Kenny as a free agent this summer.
However, it has been claimed that the defender is instead set to sign for Greek outfit PAOK Salonika, keeping him away from English football.
Kenny broke into senior football at Everton, while also spending stints on loan at Wigan Athletic and Oxford United.
He made the permanent switch to Hertha Berlin in 2022, having been unable to become a consistent part of the Toffees’ first team plans.
Sheffield United are not the only club that Kenny has rejected ahead of his move to PAOK, with the defender also turning down interest from German duo Werder Bremen and Koln.
This setback comes amid reports that Chris Wilder is set to be dismissed as Sheffield United manager this week.
Kenny was a key part of the Hertha Berlin side during his three years with the German club.
They suffered relegation to the 2. Bundesliga in his first year with the side, with the defender making 29 appearances.
He featured a further 61 times in the second tier of German football in the subsequent two seasons, with the club coming ninth and 11th.
However, he is now set to make the switch to Greek football instead of opting for a move to Bramall Lane.
If Wilder is set to depart the club this week, then it’s difficult for Sheffield United to do much in the market without a new coach in place.
Bringing in Kenny as a free agent could’ve been a solid bit of business given his experience in English football and the reasonably low cost of a deal.
However, it’s not a massive issue to lose out on this move when it’s still unclear who will be in charge of the first team next season, although Ruben Selles is believed to be in advanced discussions over the move.
It is also still very early in the transfer window, so Sheffield United have plenty of time to work on any alternative options at right-back that they wish to bring in.
