Liverpool’s recruitment strategy under Arne Slot could soon be tested as Fabrizio Romano confirms interest in one of Europe’s most talked-about young midfielders — Xavi Simons. The Dutch international, just 21, may be on the move once again after a complex and high-value transfer saga involving Paris Saint-Germain, PSV Eindhoven, and RB Leipzig.
With Liverpool reportedly asking to be “informed” about Simons’ situation, the Merseyside giants may now be primed to enter the race — but they won’t be alone.
Simons’ career path has been anything but straightforward. After impressing during an 18-month loan spell at RB Leipzig, the Bundesliga outfit made his stay permanent in January 2025. That transfer came at a significant cost — a club-record €81 million (£69 million), including €31 million in add-ons.
However, due to a unique clause from his time at PSV Eindhoven, Leipzig couldn’t finalise the deal earlier. PSV were entitled to 100% of any fee before January 2025, which forced Leipzig and PSG to delay the permanent transfer until that clause expired. This curious scenario reflects how modern contracts and strategic clauses can shape a player’s trajectory just as much as their performances on the pitch.
Now, just months after sealing the deal, Leipzig seem ready to cash in.
According to Romano:
“There are movements and my understanding is that for something around let’s say 70 to 75 million Euros [£58-63m], there is a chance to strike a deal for Xavi Simons.”“Xavi Simons has concrete possibilities of leaving Red Bull Leipzig already in this summer transfer window. It’s not guaranteed, but it’s a concrete possibility.”
Romano has confirmed that Liverpool are not alone in tracking Simons.
“The Premier League is the most concrete possibility. What we can mention is that Premier League clubs were interested one year ago,” Romano explained.“Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, also Liverpool are well informed on the situation. All of these clubs are calling to be informed.”

For Liverpool, the links make sense. Simons possesses the technical flair, attacking vision, and versatility that aligns well with Slot’s footballing philosophy. Able to operate as a No.10, winger, or deeper midfielder, the Dutchman could become a key figure in Liverpool’s post-Klopp evolution.
And with a Dutch manager now at the helm, the Anfield project could hold added appeal for Simons. His connection with the Eredivisie and national setup, coupled with Slot’s proven development record, might sway the decision in Liverpool’s favour.
The key question remains: why would Leipzig sell a player they fought so hard to sign?
Romano suggests the answer lies in the financial structuring of the deal:
“Leipzig seem ready to part ways with the Dutchman to avoid having to pay the add-ons and to actually make a profit from the sale.”
This implies that Leipzig may prefer to cut ties before performance-related clauses kick in. It also opens the door to clubs willing to meet their revised valuation of €70-75 million. For a player of Simons’ profile, that could prove a bargain — especially for teams looking to future-proof their midfield.

Liverpool, who are planning long-term under Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes, may see this as a rare opportunity. Despite already boasting depth in attacking midfield with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Harvey Elliott, and Curtis Jones, Simons would add another level of unpredictability and continental class.
Liverpool’s summer business will reveal much about the club’s new direction. With a new manager, reshaped backroom staff, and a clear desire to reinvigorate the squad, Simons would represent a major statement of intent.
Fending off competition from Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United won’t be easy. But with the groundwork laid and the player’s profile a strong fit for Slot’s system, Liverpool may well be preparing a serious bid.
As Romano summarises: “It’s not guaranteed, but it’s a concrete possibility.”
This story is far from over.
For Liverpool fans, the Simons news will feel like déjà vu. Another highly-rated young talent linked with Anfield. Another “keeping informed” line. But this time, it might be different.
There’s a quiet confidence brewing under Arne Slot — and Simons fits his blueprint. Dutch, versatile, technically elite, and mentally resilient, he could thrive in the high-octane, tactically fluid setup Liverpool are beginning to build.
The price, though steep, is reflective of modern market trends. If £60m secures a player with both resale value and a high ceiling, it’s a deal Liverpool should explore aggressively. Especially if there’s genuine openness from Leipzig to negotiate, and if the financial upside for them is clear.
It’s not just about this summer — it’s about laying foundations for the next five years. With Chelsea and United often chaotic in their planning, and Arsenal focused on other areas, Liverpool have a window here to act decisively.
Add in the Dutch connection and the personal development prospects under Slot, and this could be a smart, strategic move that signals Liverpool’s intent to challenge again, both at home and in Europe.
