Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas may have spent a few years playing for Chelsea after leaving the Gunners, but the one thing the two teams have in common is a hatred of Tottenham Hotspur.
Jack Wilshere says he learned his passion for the North London derby from Fabregas, and his kick-off goal for Arsenal against Spurs in 2009.
“We scored, and he scored (again) just after kick-off,” Wilshere recalled. “You see it in his eyes, the passion. He taught me that, Cesc.”
Wilshere is now in charge of the Arsenal u18s, and given they had a game against Spurs on Saturday, the u18 head coach thought he’d use that clip from 2009 and a video message from Fabregas to motivate his team.
“I wanted to show [the Arsenal u18s] that, and then get a message from [Fabregas], and he was brilliant. The boys were a bit shocked, but they were up for it after that,” Wilshere said.
It clearly worked, as Omari Benjamin scored a hat-trick within 24 minutes to put Arsenal in total control of the contest.
The young Gunners ended up winning 4-1, securing Wilshere’s first competitive victory in charge of the side. They’ll now look to push on in their next game against Newcastle United in the Premier League Cup next Saturday.
