Fabio Carvalho has rejected the chance to play for Portugal’s under-21s side, confirms the Portuguese Football Federation via their official website.

In the last two years, Carvalho has emerged as a bright young talent. He made his professional debut for Fulham back in September 2020, and bagged his first senior goal in May 2021.

He remained at the Whites for the next season, during which he played a huge part in their return to the Premier League. In 36 appearances, the youngster scored ten goals and assisted a further eight.

This form was enough to earn him a transfer to Liverpool during the summer, in a deal worth an initial £5 million. During his brief stint at Anfield, the 20-year-old has featured 15 times in all competitions, scoring twice.

Now, Carvalho has dropped a huge hint over his future. The Portuguese Football Federation have released a statement, revealing that he has turned down a call up to their under-21s team.

Earlier this year, the forward made his debut for the Portugal under-21s, featuring four times. He was also included in the senior provisional squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but was left out of the final squad.

Meanwhile, he has also lined up for England at youth level, lining up on 22 occasions from under-16 through to under-18 level. He qualifies for the England national team, having moved to London with his family when he was 11 years old.

As of now, his allegiance at senior level remains unclear. Some believe this is an indicator that he would like to play for England, while others think this could be a ploy to encourage Portugal to give him some minutes in the first team.
