Referee David Coote dropped from duty this weekend after Lo Celso error

Referee David Coote has been dropped from Premier League duty this weekend. He was the VAR official who made an error in judgment regarding the Giovani Lo Celso tackle on Cesar Azpilicueta, according to Football.London.

The match official’s day got worse when he once again made an error in the Leicester City-Manchester City match later that night. According to the report, it appears as if Coote has now been dropped from matchday and VAR duties for the upcoming matchday.

No retrospective ban

It was earlier reported that the midfielder will not face any retrospective action.

As per PGMOL rules, retrospective disciplinary action is reserved for only those incidents “not captured by the match officials or VAR”. Here, however, the incident was seen by the on-field officials and checked by VAR. Therefore, it does not fall into the area where retrospective action can be taken despite their admission later that they had got it wrong.

It will come s a massive relief for Jose Mourinho, who is already dealing with injuries to key personnel. With Dele Alli also facing FA charges, losing Lo Celso could have been catastrophic for the Tottenham attack.
