FA Cup: Man City hit Durham for four to punch fifth round ticket

As the FA Cup round of 32 got underway, Championship side Durham welcomed Women’s Super League heavyweights Manchester City to Maiden Castle. At the end of the 90 minutes, it was City who came away with a 4-0 win to advance to the next round.

The two sides last met back in 2021 with City coming away with a comfortable 3-0 win. The hosts went into the clash off the back of an important league win over Southampton. City’s previous outing saw them earn a 4-1 win over fellow WSL side Everton.

How it went

A seventh minute goal from Laura Coombs gave the visitors the early lead following a strong opening spell. Converting Chloe Kelly’s assist, the No.7 found the top of Naoisha McAloon’s goal. Several good chances followed for City before Jill Roord made it two shortly before half-time. The Dutch international capitalised on a well-placed pass from Kelly to bag her first of the afternoon.

Roord bagged her second shortly after the break to put her side firmly in the lead. A late fourth from Mary Fowler secured the Sky Blues’ progression into the fifth round of the competition.

Despite Man City dominating the majority of the tie, Durham were able to force several saves from Khiara Keating as they broke down their opponents’ defensive lines. Strong saves from Noonan helped the hosts to minimise the damage as they came up against a squad littered with seasoned internationals.

Durham will face an away day to Lewes before back-to-back home ties against Watford and Sheffield United as the Championship gets back underway.

Manchester City will welcome Liverpool to the Joie Stadium as the Women’s Super League returns. Taylor’s side will then face Manchester United as the two sides meet in the League Cup.
