Leicester put four past Derby in FA Cup win

Despite the scoreline, Derby — only registering their second loss in 12 games — displayed exceptional performance against a team from two tiers above. Leicester took the lead in the 30th minute, setting the tone for the match. Jutta Rantala’s precise corner kick found Lena Pettermann, whose initial header ricocheted off the post. The ball fortuitously fell back to the German international, who adeptly nudged it over the line.

The match’s intensity amplified as the second half progressed. Around the 60-minute mark, substitute Yuka Momika delivered a pinpoint cross to Janice Cayman, who skillfully found the back of the net, her effort barely touched by goalkeeper Draper’s arm.

Leicester’s dominance continued, with their third goal coming 20 minutes before the final whistle. Deanne Rose soared above the defence to head home a well-taken corner, leaving Derby’s defenders trailing.

The final blow was dealt in the 74th minute, a testament to Leicester’s relentless pressure. Yuka Momika’s free-kick led to an unfortunate own goal by Charlotte Steggles, sealing a 4-0 triumph for Leicester.

Despite the loss, Derby emerged with their heads held high. They provided a resilient display against a top-flight team, showcasing their potential and determination. The Ewes are set to return to league action with renewed vigour, facing Stourbridge at home on Sunday, 21st January.

This match serves as a vivid reminder of the FA Cup’s vital role in elevating women’s football, offering a platform for lower-league teams to shine and aspire for greater heights in the competitive football landscape.
