The FA Board have agreed changes which will see two clubs relegated from the Barclays Women’s Championship each season from 2023/2024.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official press release from The Football Association this afternoon. The changes are subject to ratification by FA Council.

Currently, only the bottom club are relegated from the Barclays Women’s Championship at the end of each season. That club then enters either the FA Women’s National League Northern or Southern Premier Division the following season depending upon geographical location. The FA Women’s National League Northern and Southern Premier Division title winners contest a Championship Play-Off Final for the right to be promoted to the Barclays Women’s Championship.

From next season, two clubs will be relegated from the Barclays Women’s Championship and they will be replaced by the two FA Women’s National League Northern and Southern Premier Division title winners. The end of season FA Women’s National League Championship Play-Off Final will be removed from the calendar as it will no longer be required.

Coventry United are the last club to be relegated from the Barclays Women’s Championship on the single-club format while no less than six clubs are challenging for promotion to Tier 2 from the FA Women’s National League.
