Simonelli was the former accountant of Silvio Berlusconi, and a former member of the board of Mediaset and auditor of Mondadori.

According to calciomercato.com, he was pushed into Lega Calcio by Adriano Galliani and Beppe Marotta who had the support of all the big clubs (Milan, Roma and Atalanta) and who instead saw the owners of Lazio and Napoli, Claudio Lotito and Aurelio De Laurentiis as strong opponents.

In the first round, it was the owner of Torino, Urbano Cairo, who prevented the majority from being reached with 13 votes out of the 14 needed for the election.

Today, during the second round, the agreement was reached with 14 votes in his favor and 6 votes against.

Simonelli is therefore the new president of Lega Serie A and succeeds the outgoing president Lorenzo Casini.

Simonelli had already been acting president for the Lega Serie A in April 2017 and was also president of the board of auditors.

In order to accept the position, he made the formal gesture of resigning from the positions he held in Fininvest, resolving the “conflict of interest” raised by the owner of Torino, Urbano Cairo, which had led to his non-election in the first round of voting.
