Real Madrid will assess defender Éder Militao after he was forced off with an unfortunate eye injury during the 0-0 draw with Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

The former Porto man was struck in the face by Bilbao striker Kenan Kodro in the 57th minute.

Militao wanted to stay on but Real’s doctors insisted on him being replaced due to concerns about his vision following the incident.

It was another frustrating night for Militao, which was in keeping with the underwhelming start to his career at the Spanish giants.

The 21-year-old has only made six appearances for Los Blancos since his summer move from Portugal, and the Bilbao game marked his first start at the Bernabeu since September 25.

The only saving grace for Militao is that La Liga’s winter break has now kicked in and Real don’t play again until they face Getafe on January 4.

That gives the unlucky defender a couple of weeks to recover from this latest setback.
