Italy are still mathematically in the race for an additional spot in next season’s Champions League after Inter’s victory over Bayern Munich and Real Madrid’s loss against Arsenal, but there is still an uphill battle to beat Spain for second place in the UEFA rankings.
Inter gained an impressive 2-1 victory away against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night, while Arsenal recorded an emphatic 3-0 win over holders Real Madrid at the Emirates.

As a result of Tuesday night’s games, England have now secured one of the two additional Champions League spots for 2025-26. They sit at the top of the UEFA Season Association Coefficient rankings with a score of 24.535.
Spain remain second in the rankings with a tally of 21.678, while Italy sit in third with 20.187.
Now, there is only one additional spot left to play for. Spain have four teams remaining in UEFA competitions this season (Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Club and Real Betis), while Italy have three (Inter, Lazio and Fiorentina).
Put simply, Italy need their associated sides to remain in Europe for as long as possible, and for as many Spanish sides as possible to be knocked out before them if they wish to claim second spot in the UEFA rankings and gain an additional Champions League spot for next season.
