Keen to finally sanction the arrival of a long-term Luke Shaw successor, Manchester United have set their sights on one of the most sought-after fullbacks in Europe.

Indeed, the Red Devils have joined the race for ‘world-class’ Bayern Munich whiz Alphonso Davies ahead of his contract expiring with the club in June 2025. Should he opt against signing a new deal in the next three weeks, he can open talks with foreign clubs and sign a pre-agreement from the beginning of January.

Bayern are pushing hard behind the scenes to ensure the player’s tenure extends past the six years – seven at the time his terms end – he’s already been at the club. He signed from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018 to embark on his first venture in Europe, doing so with one of the most illustrious clubs in world football.

A brief spell with the reserves was followed by Davies being quickly promoted to the first team, where he has since accumulated 215 appearances, scoring 11 goals and assisting 33 in that time.

Silverware hasn’t been hard to come by, either. He boasts five Bundesliga winners’ medals amongst a host of other honours and played an integral role in Bayern’s continental treble-winning campaign in 2019/2020.

Alas, it’s no surprise that Davies is garnering widespread interest across the top leagues. Signing a player of his calibre, who hasn’t even reached his peak yet at only 24 years old, for free would be an outstanding piece of business should any club get it over the line.

According to The Athletic, Real Madrid retain their longstanding hopes of bringing Davies to the Santiago Bernabeu next year, while Barcelona – managed by ex-Bayern boss Hansi Flick – have also added their name to the mix.

Regarding United’s links to the Canadian, Mario Cortegana and Seb Stafford-Bloor revealed: “Manchester United have previously been linked with Davies, but sources close to the player say the upheaval at the club and their current lack of involvement in the Champions League makes them less attractive from his end.

“At a time when budgets are tight at United, Davies would be a high-earner even if arriving as a free agent, and club sources say it is not a priority deal at present.

“Multiple industry sources have told The Athletic that Liverpool have expressed an interest in signing the player and that they would be the most plausible Premier League destination for him. However, a move to Anfield is considered an unlikely outcome at present and senior Liverpool sources have strongly denied any interest in a deal.

“Other sides, such as Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea, are monitoring the left-back.”
