Manchester United have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland international defender Diane Caldwell on a free transfer according to reports on The Red Devils’ official website.

The 33-year-old moves to The Leigh Sports Village on a deal which will initially last until the end of the season. Caldwell is a direct replacement for Manchester United centre-back Millie Turner who is sidelined with a neck injury.

Caldwell has 84 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland which she has collected over the course of a 15-year international career. The player has also scored three goals for her country.

At club level, the defender has enjoyed a career which has taken her around the world. Caldwell has played in the Republic of Ireland, the United States, Iceland, Norway, Germany and now England. She has most recently been playing in the United States with North Carolina Courage.

After completing her move to Manchester United, Caldwell said “Today is one of the most special moments in my life so far. As a life-long United fan, it’s a dream to sign for the club and it’s a big moment for me and my family. I’m so grateful to be here and will wear the badge with so much pride.

“The team are in great form, playing attractive football and Marc (Skinner) is doing a fantastic job. I just can’t wait to meet everyone and get straight down to business on the pitch.”

Caldwell is Manchester United’s first signing of the January transfer window.
