Aston Villa teenager Louie Barry is expected to be recalled from his loan at Ipswich Town and sent out somewhere else in the January window, according to The Athletic.

Barry joined the Tractor Boys in their flurry of summer signings but has struggled to make an impact under Paul Cook – featuring just six times so far this term and making the majority of his appearances in cup competitions.

It seems his days at Portman Road are numbered, with The Athletic reporting that he is expected to have his season-long loan move cut short in the upcoming window and then be sent out elsewhere to play regular first team football.

The 18-year-old forward bagged 19 goals in 24 appearances for Villa’s age-group sides last term and scored against Liverpool on his senior debut, so lots was expected of him in what is his first proper exposure at first team level.

However, with the likes of Macauley Bonne, Joe Pigott, Kyle Edwards, Bersant Celina, and Conor Chaplin also joining in the summer, Cook has an embarrassment of attacking riches at Ipswich.

30 questions about Ipswich Town’s best strikers from the last 5 years – Can you score 30/30?

The Verdict

This should come as a surprise to no one but it appears we should indeed expect Barry to be recalled next month.

It’s a shame that he hasn’t got the opportunities he will have been expecting at Ipswich and that he hasn’t exactly taken League One by storm when he has got a rare chance to impress.

You’d imagine there will be other clubs at that level lining up to sign him on loan, while Championship sides may also be keen.

For Villa, it’s going to be about finding somewhere that is the right level for the teenager but also will provide guaranteed first team minutes.

This is certainly one to watch in January in the EFL.
