Ipswich Town have joined the ever-expanding list of teams warring for the signature of Kwame Poku.

Ipswich’s interest was exclusively revealed by Football League World earlier this week, joining a number of other clubs in the race for the winger.

He has just departed League One side Peterborough United, where his contract expired, and he rejected a new offer.

With Ipswich joining the battle, we asked Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie whether he believes Poku would be a good fit for the Tractor Boys.

Kwame Poku would suit Ipswich Town’s style

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie said: “Kwame Poku, obviously lots of interest that surrounds Poku from Peterborough United.

“Ipswich are the ones that are looking like they could potentially sign him. I know he's linked with many clubs across the Championship.

“I think Ipswich are going to lose players which they have done up to know. He probably fits the bill for them.

“I really do feel that the way they play, their style, they utilise wingers, wide players, and he’s quite versatile. He could play in a number of areas across the front line.

“So, I think he'd be a really good signing for Ipswich, if that is to come off.”

It’s time for Poku to test himself

Poku only managed 27 League One outings last term after a relatively lengthy lay-off with a hamstring injury, so the fact he still managed 20 goal contributions for the Posh is remarkable.

He also, throughout that spell on the sidelines, retained his place in the minds of fans as one of the best players in the league.

Based on that, and what he might have been capable of with a full season at his disposal, it’s clear that Poku needs football beyond the level Peterborough can offer.

Staggeringly, as many as 26 clubs are thought to be looking at the Ghanaian forward, with Rangers and Birmingham City among them.

It’s a sore summer for Peterborough United

Already, the Posh have seen Ricky Jade-Jones jet off to German side St Pauli on a free, with chairman Darragh MacAnthony taking to X to lament the fact that the club would be due less compensation thanks to the international transfer.

Poku and Jade-Jones join Hector Kyprianou, David Ajiboye, Jed Steer and Kabongo Tshimanga on the list of players who have left London Road for nothing this summer.

But Poku is the one who will sting, with his age and the level and number of clubs interested. If Peterborough had the forward under contract, they could sit and wait for the highest bidder this summer, then reinvest those funds and go again.

As it stands, the club are losing one of their best players and are set to receive a fraction of what they could have got from a transfer in compensation fees.

This summer will be a painful lesson for Peterborough to learn, to get players tied down to contracts well before they expire, or sell while they still have the option.
