Noel Whelan is adamant that Arsenal defender Callum Chambers would be a great Leeds United signing ahead of the 5 October transfer cut-off.
The former Whites and Coventry striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, believes that Marcelo Bielsa “would love” to work with the 25-year-old centre-back.
Football Insider revealed yesterday that the Yorkshire club had contacted the Gunners regarding Chambers after missing out on Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol.
They are also trying to lure rising star Haydon Roberts from Brighton and a second bid of £800,000 has been rejected by the Seagulls for the defender yesterday.
Whelan claimed that England international Chambers‘ experience, character and age make him the perfect fit for Leeds.
“I think Callum Chambers would add great value to the squad, I really do,” he told Football Insider.
“Chambers has a wealth of experience, he is at the right age and he has the right kind of character. I imagine Marcelo Bielsa would love to work with him and vice versa.
“We need another centre-half, there is no doubt about that. He is somebody that would add great competition for places in that centre-half role and we desperately need that. One injury to either of the centre-halves and we are back to squad one again. God forbid that we get two injuries because then we would not have any proper centre-halves. Struijk can fill in there but he is very young and raw.
“We need more experience and more quality in that position. Chambers, having been at Arsenal, has that pedigree and would be able to play the style of play that Marcelo Bielsa likes.
“The club like to buy young players and he is still very young which is incredible because it feels like he has been around forever. He is definitely a player that the club should look into signing.”
