Scott Wright could be wearing the Rangers jersey next week after Derek McInnes revealed Aberdeen are open to a “good offer” for him this month.

That is according to Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Light Blues’ bid to lure winger Wright from his old club.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Steven Gerrard confirmed Rangers were negotiating a pre-contract deal for the 23-year-old.

Wright started for the Pittodrie side as they were trounced 4-1 by Premiership strugglers Ross County in Dingwall on Saturday.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes revealed afterwards that Rangers have made clear they want the winger for next season but his club are open to a “good offer” for an immediate switch to be sealed.

Whelan believes Rangers should be applauded for their recruitment strategy and expects a deal to soon be sealed for Wright.

He told Football Insider: “They’re doing things, everything, the right way and I think that’s the thing now, Celtic need to look across the road to see what Rangers are doing.

“They’re doing everything right, they’re getting young players in, they’ve got good relationships with clubs, they’re not wasting any time, Steven Gerrard is pinpointing players, they’re getting them done and that’s the way it should be.

“When you’re successful in winning football matches, players want to go there because they see the way the club’s being run, they see the way the games are going, they see the way they’re dominating him – who doesn’t want to be part of that?

“I would jump at the chance and the opportunity. Wright could join next week.

“The thing is, Aberdeen are going to need the money, we know financially these smaller clubs – and Aberdeen are a smaller club, we know that the chairman has already come out and said that the Covid is hitting them – they may need to get some money in this January just to keep the club going because they’re building a new stadium as well.”
