Despite suffering play-off heartache last season, The Hatters will be hopeful of bringing about another promotion push under Dave Challinor.

Stockport rose to the League One challenge emphatically after leapfrogging out of the fourth tier the season prior, finishing third last term, only five points behind second-placed Wrexham.

However, Stockport would face agony in the play-offs, losing on penalties to Leyton Orient in the semi-final over two very closely contested legs.

Stockport will be keen on adding further quality and depth to the squad as they take on another League One season, with the club being linked with a summer move for Stoke City forward Nathan Lowe.

A report from Football Insider has claimed that Stockport are in advanced talks to secure the services of the 19-year-old prodigy on a loan deal, who tasted success in the fourth-tier at Walsall for the first half of the 2024-25 season.

With this news in mind, Don Goodman has issued his thoughts on Stockport’s move for Lowe, and whether it could be a success.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes Stockport County will be landing a “brilliant coup” if a deal for Nathan Lowe gets over the line, with League One his next calling after goalscoring success at Walsall.

Goodman said: “I've got a real soft spot for Stockport County and anybody that's listened to me waxing lyrical about Dave Challinor will know that I'm surprised that he is still the manager of Stockport and hasn't been headhunted by perhaps a club higher up the food chain in the EFL.

“Having said all of that, they seem to lose key players, like Louie Barry, but be able to overcome that and continue to play good football, get good results and I don't expect anything less for next season.

“Adding Nathan Lowe would be a brilliant coup. I think he's a player that Dave Challinor can improve again. He proved he could do it at League Two level, and I wouldn't doubt that he could score goals for Stockport County in League One.”

Nathan Lowe could be a great success at Stockport County

There’s no doubt Nathan Lowe is a player who can reach the very top of the English game, and at 19 has so much potential to develop and thrive into a top-class marksman.

He proved he’s a natural-born goalscorer in League Two with Walsall, netting 15 times from 22 matches before he was recalled by Stoke City.

Despite netting on his return against West Brom, Lowe managed just one more goal for the remainder of the season, indicating that he isn’t quite ready for the step-up to the second-tier just yet.

Instead, it seems logical to test himself at the middle ground in League One, with that spell key to seeing if his game is good enough for that level before trying to become an integral player for the Potters in the Championship.

There doesn’t appear to be much disparity between the fourth and third tiers given Stockport County and Wrexham’s ability to finish high up the table last season, so Lowe should be able to kick on and showcase his qualities if a move to Edgeley Park goes through.

If Lowe can have a similar impact as he did for Walsall in his last loan spell, then this signing could be the difference maker in their quest to gain promotion to the Championship.
