Speaking exclusively with FLW, Don Goodman has been discussing Leicester City's potential swoop for ex-Everton star, Asmir Begovic.
Leicester City are reportedly eyeing up a move for ex-Everton goalkeeper, Asmir Begovic.
Football Insider revealed last week that both Leicester and Southampton have both touched base with the soon-to-be free agent, after Everton confirmed that he would be leaving the club upon the expiration of his contract at the end of June.
It's understood that the Foxes are intent on adding to their shot-stopping department this summer, having seen both Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen depart the King Power Stadium.
The 38-year-old Begovic joined Everton in the summer of 2021, but only made 12 appearances for the Toffees, before spending the 2023/24 season out on loan with Championship side QPR.
Speaking exclusively with Football League World, we asked Sky Sports pundit and former player, Don Goodman: 'Leicester City are eyeing up the signing of Asmir Begovic. Do you think he'd be a solid player to have in the team, or should the club opt for younger alternatives?'
Goodman said: "I think it's always interesting when a player gets to 38; Asmir Begovic as a goalkeeper means that he could do a job at 38.
"But, if he goes to Leicester, is he going to be getting regular football? I'm not so sure. Obviously he's just gone from playing 46 games for Queens Park Rangers the season before last.
"He's literally just gone and had a full season for Everton sitting on the bench and not playing. You'd think that in the twilight of your career, you just want to play as many games as you can, and whether or not he'd be able to do that at Leicester City in the Championship next season is probably doubtful.
"Having said all of that, as a character, as an influence, as a seasoned professional, he would be a good addition to anybody."
Having already lost two goalkeepers in Ward and Iversen, and with transfer interest heating up for Mads Hermansen, Leicester City's goalkeeping department is undergoing a real transition period this summer.
West Ham are understood to be taking an interest in Hermansen, with the Foxes said to be open to offers for the 24-year-old Dane due to their Profit and Sustainability concerns.
As such, Jakub Stolarczyk may well soon be left as Leicester's only senior shot-stopper, but the 24-year-old Polishman is still largely inexperienced in-between the sticks, having only made 20 first-team appearances for the Foxes having graduated from their academy system back in 2020.
Therefore, given the club's current financial situation, they may need to conduct some highly shrewd and cost-efficient business this summer, and so the free agent market could make real appeal for the club.
Begovic is a highly experienced goalkeeper, having made over 250 Premier League appearances during his career, as well as just shy of 100 at Championship level too.
The Bosnian international has played Champions League and Europa League football, and has a Premier League and FA Cup winners medal on his CV.
As such, adding a player like him to the dressing room could provide Leicester with an invaluable source of experience, knowledge and leadership, and enable them to perhaps take their time somewhat with the development of Stolarczyk, or indeed any other younger keeper they may sign this summer.
