Birmingham City are undergoing a lot of change at the moment, and Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman feels their futures may be best-served elsewhere.
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has spoken to FLW about what he feels the futures of Birmingham City outcasts Tyler Roberts and Dion Sanderson could look like.
Birmingham City are hard at work rebuilding for their return to the Championship following their runaway League One title win last season.
But with ten new players having arrived at St Andrew's, there will also need to be a clear-out of those who are now deemed surplus to requirements as the Blues look to make it two successive promotions and claim a place in the Premier League.
Forward Tyler Roberts and defender Dion Sanderson have hit something of a crossroads in terms of their Birmingham careers. Roberts was sent out on loan to Northampton Town last season, while Sanderson was sent to Blackburn.
GiveMeSport has revealed that the duo are attracting interest from abroad as they look to secure moves away from the Midlands club.
Both returned to St Andrew's at the end of last season, but neither have much prospect of breaking into this revamped Birmingham side, so the question facing both the players and the club is what to do with them next.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has confirmed his belief that neither player seems to have much of a future with Birmingham, telling us that, "I'm not sure whether it will be at home or abroad, but these are two players that I would expect to leave Birmingham City."
Goodman feels that Roberts has not reached his potential since joining the club from Leeds United in 2023: "I hadn't realised that Tyler Roberts had been sent out on loan to Northampton last season. He's a player that broke on the scene with huge potential, 26 years old now, and when I looked at his numbers I was surprised to see that he's never scored more than five goals in a season, which is an underachievement for the talent he's got. Injuries have hindered him, so a fresh start is required."
He also feels that Dion Sanderson is in a very similar position to Roberts: "I've spoken about Dion Sanderson before. He's another player in the prime of his career. He's not wanted at Birmingham and was sent on loan at Blackburn Rovers last season. He didn't do enough for them to come back in for him. He's another player who needs a fresh start to draw a line in the sand and kick on."
Both Tyler Roberts and Dion Sanderson arrived at St Andrew's in 2023. Both players were with the club throughout the relegation season that followed, with Roberts making 17 appearances and failing to score, while Sanderson made 37 appearances.
But the 2024-25 season saw both sent out on loan. Roberts went to Northampton, but the goals didn't flow in League One either. He made 27 appearances for them last season but only scored once. Sanderson went to Blackburn, where he was reunited with John Eustace, with whom he'd worked at Wolves and Birmingham, only for Eustace to leave Ewood Park for Derby County a month later.
The Eustace connection gives Sanderson a potential exit route from Birmingham. Eustace is an admirer of Sanderson and there was speculation that he could reunite with him for a fourth time at Derby earlier in the summer; when the defender first arrived at the club in 2023, Eustace named him as their captain. Roberts had been expected to leave Birmingham this summer following comments made by the Blues manager Chris Davies while he was at Northampton.
