Former Newcastle United player Steve Howey has warned Sunderland that they have to be careful with the way they spend their money this summer, during an exclusive interview with Football League World.

The North East outfit are currently reeling from losing out in the Sky Bet League One play-offs once more, with the Black Cats having bowed out at the semi final stage to Lincoln City, who beat them over two legs on aggregate.

That development ramped up some of the pressure on the shoulders of Lee Johnson at the Stadium of Light, with there even being some suggestions that the club were considering giving him the sack after just a few months in charge, however these claims were later rubbished by the club’s majority shareholder and chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.

Now Sunderland will be aiming to bring in the right players this summer in order to mount yet another push for promotion in what is set to be their fourth successive season in the third division.

With Johnson seemingly set to be handed significant funds to bring in new additions, Howey has been quick to warn the club that they must be careful with how they spend their money, as he outlined his feelings on the matter when speaking to FLW recently:

“I think Lee Johnson will be backed but it’s not going to be a case off them having the money and going back to the Championship.

“That would be the silly way to go about it and I think it has to be measured and it has to be calculated if they’re going to finally go back up.”

Although no signings have been made by the Black Cats as of yet, the club has bid farewell to some already in recent weeks, with Max Power and Grant Leadbitter being the key names on the list of released personnel as Johnson begins to trim the current squad.
