Harry Winks could “step into any team” if he chose to leave Tottenham in January, according to Frank McAvennie.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Celtic and West Ham striker claimed teams “would be happy” to take the “fantastic” 24-year-old from Jose Mourinho’s side.

Speaking to Sky Sports while on England duty, Winks admitted that his situation at Spurs is “difficult” and his lack of first team football could scupper his hopes of playing in next summer’s European Championship.

Winks, a Spurs academy product and big fans favourite, has started eight games this season in all competitions but has not started a Premier League game since the 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in September.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the England international’s potential winter exit, McAvennie said:

“I think he is a great player but Mourinho has his ways of how he wants Spurs to play. Winks is not fitting into that.

“All credit to the boy though because he wants to play, he is not content just taking the money. Too many players now would just sit there and take the money.

“It is nice to see he is not one of them and Jose Mourinho will respect that.

“I do not think he is doing anything wrong because he is a fantastic player. I think he would step into any team and they would be happy to take him.”
