Exclusive: SPFL ridiculed amid Rangers whistleblower update, Celtic ‘don’t want this’ | OneFootball

Noel Whelan has ridiculed the SPFL’s probe into Dundee’s vote that found no wrongdoing as Rangers push for an inquiry to avoid a scenario even Celtic don’t want.

The former Aberdeen and Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, urged the governing body to study football’s imminent return in Germany and refrain from making premature decisions on the season’s outcome.

An inquiry, commissioned by the SPFL, claimed to find “no evidence of improper behaviour” in the vote which saw the lower leagues finished early.

Rangers have since reiterated their demands for an independent inquest into the whole resolution process, stating Deloitte’s investigation “alarmingly failed to examine wider fundamental issues.”

The Light Blues released another statement on Sunday night to reveal they will provide evidence to all member clubs well in advance of a general meeting to approve an independent investigation.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the probe’s findings, Whelan pointed out that even 9-in-a-row chasers Celtic won’t want it.

“Of course the SPFL would find no wrongdoing, it is their own body.

“It is like backing up a story being out with the lads coming in late and the missus is having a go at you! You are never going to put yourself down! They are going to stick to it.

“Look at everybody else around the world bar Holland. They want to complete the seasons.

“I think if everyone else can manage – look at Germany, they are getting back into the swing of things as early as May.

“I do not think Celtic want to finish the season like this, nor do Rangers. Everyone wants to get this season finished the right way.”

The SPFL has called an extraordinary general meeting for 12 May after requisitions by Rangers, Hearts and Stranraer.

The SPFL is required to hold a general meeting of all 42 clubs if it receives requests from three members and the organisation’s board said on Monday it had met “to consider requisitions by Heart of Midlothian FC, Rangers FC and Stranraer FC calling for an EGM to consider a resolution put forward by them”.
