Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie feels this move “might not quite happen” given the Terriers’ current squad situation
Huddersfield Town are one of the clubs interested in former Bristol City forward Nahki Wells.
That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon, who also revealed via his Patreon page that Bradford City are eyeing the 35-year-old.
The Bermuda international has spent over five years with the Robins, and discussions over a new deal were in place, but it was announced last month that he was to depart the club as a free agent when his contract expired this summer.
We asked Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie whether Huddersfield would be a good move for Wells.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie said: “Huddersfield with Nahki Wells, obviously with him being on a free transfer, they have got a lot of strikers.
“And the thing is with Nahki Wells, I mean, is he going to play every game? Does he want to play every game? I think that's going to be the question.
“He played a lot more than what he probably thought he was going to last season at Bristol City, particularly when they bought Sinclair Armstrong and you felt that he was going to be the second striker in the way they play.
“But I think that's going to be down to whether Nahki Wells is happy enough trying to fight for that no.9 shirt. Whereas there are a lot of strikers there who have got potential as well.
“So, you feel that at his age, I think he'll be wanting to get more game time, and I think, dropping into League One, I think he would expect to play as well.
“So, I think that'll be one that maybe might not quite happen. I think he'll want to play if he's dropping down to that level.”
As mentioned by Hendrie, the Terriers already have a handful of strikers at their disposal, ranging from the young prospect Joe Taylor, to the prime-aged Dion Charles and even experienced heads like Freddie Ladapo.
Despite being available on a free, it’s difficult to see what gap in the current squad Wells would fill, which could cause an issue in terms of minutes.
Nixon claimed in his report that Wells still wants Championship football, so if that is his aim, then battling for minutes a division lower is unlikely to suit him.
He made 41 Championship appearances last season, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists, so even at 35, he undoubtedly still has something to offer a top side.
But even Wells himself will be alive to the fact that he’s unlikely to have many more seasons ahead of him as far as his playing career goes, so he will want to maximise his exposure to the pitch.
Dropping down a level may be the best way to ensure that, but due to their already over-subscribed striking department, it seems unlikely that Huddersfield are going to be the right hosts.
