Speaking exclusively with FLW, Lee Hendrie has been discussing what Sheffield Wednesday must have in order to survive in the Championship this season.
Sheffield Wednesday are facing an uphill battle against relegation from the Championship.
The Owls suffered a nightmare summer with financial mismanagement, seeing them placed under multiple transfer embargoes, which has ultimately limited the business they have been able to conduct.
New boss Henrik Pedersen is still feeling the effects of this, with the Steel City side still limited in their ability to register new players, despite having been released from a transfer embargo before the 2025/26 campaign started.
Owner Dejphon Chansiri has been pleaded with by supporters and pundits alike to sell the club, which could be the only remedy left to save the club from relegation.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, former Aston Villa midfielder and Sky Sports pundit, Lee Hendrie, agrees that drastic action must be taken to stop Wednesday dropping down to League One.
“I think the best chance of Sheffield Wednesday staying up is probably if they get a deal done to sell the football club,” stated Hendrie.
“So they can start getting some foundation and start building again. I think it's just been such a tough call for them, but I think togetherness is going to be a massive key in them staying in the Championship this season.
“It just feels like they surely want to bring players in, but the fact that the club feels like it's in such a sorry state at the moment, I'm sure that players will be looking at Wednesday if being linked and thinking, 'do I want to be going into a football club that's in that state at the moment?'
“I'm pretty sure that most wouldn't. So, togetherness is going to be massive in that squad if they are to stay in the league.
"But I think they've got to come to the agreement of getting the club sold and moving on.”
Spirited performances against Leicester City and Bolton Wanderers to start the season gave Sheffield Wednesday supporters hope that their fate may not already be sealed.
But after a 3-0 bruising at the hands of Stoke City, the future looks rather harrowing for the Steel City side.
They are still yet to add any new players to their squad, and their youthful group is likely to come undone over 46 games if that isn't addressed soon.
The 1 September transfer deadline edges ever closer, and time is therefore running out for the Owls to add some fresh faces to their fold in the way of loan deals, with it looking more and more likely that Wednesday will have to settle for what they’ve got.
