Sheffield Wednesday talisman Josh Windass has been scouted by a number of Championship clubs heading into the January transfer window, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

Windass has seen his opportunities limited at the start of 2021/22 due to a hamstring injury, but he’s returned recently for Darren Moore’s side and made an instant impact.

In only two League One appearances, the 27-year-old has struck two goals and also registered an assist, winning the Owls’ clash with MK Dons in style and contributing to a 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers.

The forward also got a vital 45 minutes under his belt against Hartlepool United in the EFL Trophy midweek.

Despite putting pen-to-paper on a new deal at Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, Windass isn’t short of admirers heading into January.

Football League World have been told that West Brom, Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City and Hull City have all scouted Windass heading into the January transfer window.

West Brom are on the lookout for a new forward as their promotion push stutters, whilst Boro, Blackburn and Stoke can all count themselves as play-off contenders. Hull, meanwhile, are fighting back from a tough start and have won four consecutive Championship fixtures.

Windass’ Dad, Dean, played for Middlesbrough and Hull during his own career.

Windass’ remit for the season was to assist Wednesday in winning promotion back to the Championship following relegation last term.

Moore’s side have collected 33 points from their opening 20 fixtures, which leaves them seventh in the table, outside the top-six by a single point.

Clubs scouting Windass, of course, doesn’t mean a move is in the pipeline in any way, with Wednesday eager to make sure their League One stay doesn’t span longer than 12 months.

The former Rangers and Wigan forward has scored 15 goals for the Owls in 55 appearances across all competitions.
