Frank McAvennie claims West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena is finally realising his potential thanks to the coaching of David Moyes.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the Irons legend said that the 29-year-old is “one of the best” defenders at the London Stadium when at the top of his game.
Balbuena scored as the Hammers came back from a 3-0 deficit to draw 3-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend.
It was the Paraguay international’s third consecutive Premier League start and his sixth in all competitions this season.
McAvennie was adamant that the centre-halves selection over Issa Diop on Sunday was justified by David Moyes.
“I have always liked him,” he told Football Insider.
“I have known about him for a while and I knew how well the boy could play. On the top of his game he is probably one of our best defenders.
“The fans are seeing it now and that is because he is getting worked on. David Moyes was a centre-half so there is no doubt in my mind that he is working with the defenders. They are getting worked every day in training.
“It is good and then benefits are there for all to see.”
Speaking after the dramatic comeback, Balbuena told the club’s media: “We know that only eleven can start and then you have to wait for your opportunity, which I did.
“I am working every day and never giving up, doing my best so that when I got my opportunity I was able to take it, as I did.”
