Exclusive: Pundit unsure about Rangers’ pursuit of Bongani Zungu | OneFootball

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has exclusively told Football FanCast that Rangers and director of football Ross Wilson should decide against purchasing Bongani Zungu on a permanent basis.

Following his arrival on a season-long loan from French outfit Amiens on Deadline Day, the two clubs agreed an option to buy should Rangers opt to sign the South African permanently.

But with an abundance of top centre-midfielders in their squad, Zungu has struggled for opportunities under Steven Gerrard.

Having been an unused substitute for Sunday’s Old Firm derby, Zungu has played just one minute in Rangers’ previous five Scottish Premiership matches, although his breach of Covid-19 which saw him miss two games, certainly didn’t help.

Reports have suggested that the champions would have to pay Amiens £2.7million to sign the midfielder permanently, but McAvennie believes that fee would be too steep for a squad player.

He told Football FanCast: “The boy’s a talent. It depends on the money they want. Rangers have got an abundance of midfield players. £2.7million is a lot of money for someone that’s not going to play every week.

“He’s a good player, but when you’ve got Davis, Jack, Aribo, Kent and Kamara, they’ve got loads of midfielders. He’s done the job, he’s come in, got a winners medal. Whether he signs or not, he’s done what he came for.”
