Michael Brown has been left in awe of Harry Winks’ honesty after he opened up about his “difficult” situation at Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs midfielder sympathised with the England international’s domestic situation.

The 24-year-old told Sky Sports last week he was in a “difficult” situation at Tottenham and admitted he needed to take whatever opportunities he was given to keep his place in the squad for both club and country.

Brown told Football Insider: He’s hungry, he’s a great lad, he’s a great player and he wants to do well for Spurs, he loves Spurs, he wants to play football, he wants to get into the England international squad, he wants to make the Euros.

“He’s frustrated because it won’t help his case. We talk about (Jordan) Henderson, Declan Rice, all these midfielders – he got a decent amount of games over the international break but he wants to make that his own and by doing that, he wants to play football for Spurs.

“He’s come out and it was brilliant, actually, I think he was spot on: ‘I’m just frustrated but I’ve got to work hard.’ What else is it is he supposed to say? I think he was very honest, I think it was balanced, I think it was the correct thing to do. To say: ‘I’m delighted just to be part of the squad,’ that doesn’t show ambition.

“I think Jose Mourinho would go: ‘Of course he’s disappointed, that’s what I’d expect.'”

After starting Tottenham’s first three Premier League games this term, Winks has featured just once more in the league.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko, and Tanguy Ndombele have established themselves as Mourinho’s first-choice midfield in recent weeks.
