Millwall are monitoring Gillingham midfielder Dom Jefferies ahead of the summer window, but they will face competition for his signature, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

The 21-year-old Welshman started out at Cardiff City before joining Newport County’s academy, but he dropped to non-league Salisbury in the summer of 2020.

His form had caught the eye of Brentford, and after training regularly with the B team, Jefferies was offered a contract by the Londoners, who had been promoted to the Premier League.

Therefore, Jefferies understandably found it hard to get near the first-team, but he was outstanding for the B team, as he collected the Player of the Year trophy.

However, in a search for first-team football, the energetic midfielder decided to join Gillingham, and he has featured regularly over the past two years, making over 50 appearances.

Yet, Jefferies’ contract is expiring in the summer, and it's unclear where he will be playing his football next season.

The Gills would be entitled to compensation if he does move on due to his age, and there are clubs higher up who could be ready to offer Jefferies a chance.

FLW can reveal that Millwall are keeping tabs on the player, with Neil Harris knowing Jefferies from his time when he was in charge of Gillingham.

But, they won’t have a free run at the youngster, as Hungarian side Fehervar have offered Jefferies a deal as they look to bring him in, whilst we explained back in December that Hibs were looking at the player.

Fehervar have been scouting the Football League regularly in the past few months, with Charlton skipper George Dobson set to join ahead of next season after agreeing a pre-contract, and they’re hoping that Jefferies will follow suit.

Ultimately, Jefferies is in a position where he can decide his next move due to his contract situation, so he will have to weigh up his options over the coming weeks before picking his next club.

Millwall’s summer transfer plans

From Millwall’s perspective, this is not the sort of signing that is going to overly excite the fans, but it’s the sort of deal that the Lions should be making.

We know that they aren’t a club with resources to spend more than their rivals in the Championship, so they need to identify talent from the lower leagues that can make the step up, and Jefferies is someone who does have the potential to do that.

Of course, the added bonus from all of this is the fact that Harris worked with Jefferies during his time with the Gills at Priestfield.

That means he is in an excellent position to judge Jefferies’ ability, and he also knows about his character and whether he is someone who will push himself to improve and get better in the years to come.

So, Millwall should trust Harris’ judgement on this one, and if he is a player he wants, they should do all they can to bring him to The Den.

In terms of the bigger picture, Harris’ magnificent job since returning to Millwall means there should be optimism about what next season can bring, but he does need support to add to the squad.

A striker is the obvious priority, and if they can make a few shrewd additions, the Lions will want to be looking up the table once again after their battle with relegation this season.
