New Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick wants to look at a potential deal for Manchester United youngster Zidane Iqbal as the Championship club begin planning for the January transfer window, Football League World can exclusively reveal.
Carrick was appointed in late October and will take charge of his first game at the Riverside today as the Teessiders host Bristol City.
The Boro job is the 41-year-old’s first step into permanent management but he has an extensive contact book on the back of his decorated playing career and it seems he is keen to use it ahead of January.
FLW can exclusively reveal that Carrick wants to lean on his Man United links and look at a potential deal for Iqbal, the Red Devils’ teenage midfielder.
Boro head of football Kieran Scott is starting to put together general transfer plans ahead of the winter window at the moment.
Any move for Iqbal would almost certainly be a loan given how highly rated he is at Old Trafford.
The 19-year-old made his senior debut in the Champions League last season, signed a new long-term deal in the summer, and has featured in Premier League and Europa League matchday squads under Erik ten Hag this term.
