With Liverpool’s midfield rebuild under threat after the reports Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are set to move to the Saudi Pro League, the emphasis to sign the right players who will work instantly has increased.

Senegalese starlet Papa Diop’s agent has claimed the Reds are interested in the 19-year-old and with just one year remaining on his contract, a cut-price deal may be available. Also playing in Belgium, for Zulte Waregem, it may be the right time for Diop to take a step to the next level.

Sagoe said:

“Liverpool are keeping an eye on him and what I can say in regards to that we have had conversations with the Senegalese national team and they are looking to bring in Papa Bembe for the next AFCON which is next January.

“It looks good because the player would get international experience, therefore it would be an easier experience coming to the Premier League if it happens. We will see…

“He is an all-action midfielder, very similar to Steven Gerrard, box to box midfielder. He can defend and attack and scores goals from midfield, this is one of his best attributes.

“He always rises to the occasion when it matters and he has big soldiers so he takes responsibility for his team whether they need a goal or need a vital assist. He takes responsibility. That is pretty much him in a nutshell.”

After the shock of Thursday and Friday’s news, LFC’s transfer strategy has to change. If Fabinho and Henderson leave, the squad will lack experience and quality in midfield. Therefore, it is important to sign a top-quality first-team defensive midfielder. Signing an inexperienced player yet to play in any of Europe’s top leagues is too much of a gamble.

Diop could be a star and had Fabinho stayed, he could have potentially grown into the role with no pressure. Liverpool now needs a ready-made first-team player.

Although he could potentially be signed alongside another midfielder which would help cover further positions across the squad.
