It’s that time of the year already, where not only is it crunch time on the pitch, but people are also starting to look forward to the summer transfer window and where clubs could strengthen their current squads.
For Liverpool, it’s fair to say that things are going well on the pitch. Arne Slot currently has his side sitting top of the Premier League table and seven points clear of title rivals Arsenal.

However, despite the Reds’ pure brilliance this season, there has always been a certain contract cloud that has been hanging over the business on the pitch. That is, of course, referring to the expiring contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Subsequently, that has led top a strong belief that this summer could be one of a major overhaul for Slot’s squad with multiple big names being tipped as potential transfer targets.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jermaine Pennant spoke exclusively to Anfield Index and revealed one player that has caught his eye…
Pennant was quick to heap praise on Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, who has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield next season. The 25-year-old forward currently has 17 goals and five assists in 23 Premier League appearances so far this season.
His record since joining Newcastle back in August 2022 has been nothing short of sensational. Isak has scored a huge 54 goals and assisted a further nine in his 96 appearances for the Magpies so far.
“Isak would be absolutely fantastic for any team,” began Pennant, “He would be signing of the season if he joined Liverpool!”

“I actually believe that the amount of goals that he guarantees would make Liverpool title favourites again next year!”
It’s hard to argue with Pennant’s observations, with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo being standout performers in the entire division in their positions on each wing. However, Slot has lacked a natural forward down the middle at times, whether that be due to the struggles of Darwin Nunez or Diogo Jota’s injury struggles.
“The smart thing to do would be to sell Darwin Nunez and use the money from that sale to bring in Isak,” pointed out Pennant.

“Whether he plays alongside or without Salah, Liverpool need another forward that can guarantee 18-20 league goals every single season.”
There has been heavy speculation over the future of Nunez, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that Liverpool did receive a considerable offer for the Uruguayan back in January. The bid was believed to be in the region of around £70million and it’ll be interesting to see if such bid will be repeated in the summer.
Newcastle United are expected to demand anywhere between £100m-140m for the Swedish striker, but it’s hard to argue that he wouldn’t be worth it in today’s market.
